We spoke to Dr. Jen Newell, a Naturopathic Doctor in Toronto, Ontario about how beauty and wellness are interconnected and why you can’t fully achieve healthy skin without also considering your overall health.
How are beauty and wellness linked?
Dr. Newell: Wellness begins with a conscious decision to shape a healthy lifestyle and that can happen at any age or stage in life. Looking and feeling your best is when your inner beauty and overall health shines through and becomes the outer beauty you can see. The connection between the products you put on your skin and the impact nutrition and lifestyle choices have on your skin health is integral to your wellness practice. I regularly talk to patients about the relationship between health and beauty and why working on a healthy foundation is critical to looking your most radiant. Naturopathic recommendations often include dietary recommendations to avoid pro-inflammatory foods and to follow an anti-inflammatory diet high in anti-oxidants, stress management techniques, lifestyle modifications, topical products to address specific concerns, in-office treatments like acupuncture or aesthetic procedures, and targeted supplementation, botanicals and/or nutraceuticals.
Why is it important for women to embrace health and wellbeing – not just topical beauty rituals?
When considering how you care for your skin, I have found that the women I see in my practice see much better and longer-term results when they take a holistic approach that takes into account the various aspects of their overall health that directly impacts their physical appearance – digestive health and gut function, hormonal balance, stress management, and nutritional status. You can apply all the creams with the greatest, most advanced active ingredients but if you aren’t nourishing your skin and taking care of your overall health your skin will not have that glow that radiates from the inside out, that vitality.
How does Naturopathic Medicine address common skin concerns?
Typically during an initial visit at my office patients experience a thorough assessment of their particular skin concerns that includes a detailed history of their digestive health, diet, stress levels, menstrual cycle, sleep patterns and skincare regimen. We order any necessary lab work and I create an initial treatment plan with collaboration from the patient to address the underlying cause of their concerns. I encourage patients to bring their skincare products with them to this visit as well as any supplements they may be taking in order to best assess their suitability and effectiveness for their particular goals. The treatment protocol recommended is individualized for each patient and their unique needs but often includes dietary recommendations, intravenous infusion therapy (IV nutrients), skincare products and in-office aesthetic treatments, supplements, and botanicals, and/or acupuncture. This comprehensive treatment plan is created in collaboration with the patient to ensure their success in the journey.
What are the most common skin concerns you see at your office?
I see a number of common, frustrating skin concerns including both adult and teenage acne, eczema, rosacea and various forms of dermatitis. In addition, I see a number of patients looking for a holistic and natural approach to longevity and aesthetic medicine. There is a growing interest in the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related dysfunction, disorders, decline and diseases, including the physical signs of aging. Natural therapies together with modern medical science slow down your aging and have you feeling and looking younger with more energy, clearer thinking, better memory, more physical vitality, and stamina.
What are your favorite Fitglow products?
This is almost too difficult to answer; I have used pretty much all the Fitglow Beauty products and they are part of my regular skincare and beauty routine. I use the Cloud Skin Boost Serum in the morning to hydrate and plump up my skin so that makeup applies beautifully. It doesn’t leave my skin greasy at all and leaves my skin feeling smooth and deeply moisturized. I also use the Redness Rescue Cream to neutralize any redness and calm inflammation in my skin. This cream really evens out my skin tone. Another favorite of mine is the Eyebright concealer which really saves the day on mornings when I haven’t gotten enough sleep but still need to look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for my patients. The yellow tone of Eyebright makes me look rested and hydrates the delicate skin beneath the eyes. Finally, I am obsessed with the Lip Colour Serum in Go. This is the perfect pale pink and the formula gently plumps and hydrates my lips…which is a great benefit during the cold, dry winter.
What is your advice to people with skin challenges?
The biggest piece of advice I can provide is the importance of seeking out professional advice from someone who takes the time to listen to you and thoroughly assess your concerns. Don't self-diagnose or rely on the advice from "Dr. Google" or a blogger / YouTuber that isn't properly educated in the structure, function, and pathology of the skin. While the internet is full of great advice it can be difficult to discern between what is appropriate for your needs and what isn't. I strongly encourage you to reach out to a professional and take a healing approach that takes your individual needs and concerns into account.
